Uncertainty
“I don’t do well with uncertainty”. If this is you, try out this exercise, you may be in more control than you think!
Step 1: Make 3 columns on a paper. First column write down what situation(s) in your life you feel uncertain about (new job, new business, new relationship, new move, etc.)
Step 2: Determine exactly what type of possible outcomes scare you in each situation & write it down on the second column. Key here is that you allow yourself to be vulnerable. This can be a hard place to let yourself go to but sometimes it’s necessary. As I like to say “this is when you call it for what it is”.
Step 3: Plan. On the third column is where you write down your solution to your possible future scary outcomes. Don’t be afraid to add multiple solutions. The more alternatives (& there are always alternatives), the safer you feel & naturally the more sane you feel. For example, “if I don’t get this job I will do ...” or “if I don’t get approved for this apartment, I will follow up with...”.
The fact is change & uncertainty are inevitable in life. Whenever something changes, you feel uncertain about the outcomes, which ultimately comes from the fear of the unknown. How we react or acclimate to change is either going to positively or negatively affect our sanity. I’m not sure about you, but my sanity is priceless. We can’t control the environment we're in or the future but we can control ourselves; our behaviors, choices and attitude towards situations.
Being uncertain about situations, doesn't have to be so scary!
